Knee Pain

Viscosupplementation therapy is a procedure involving the injection of gel-like substances (hyaluronates) into a joint to supplement the gelatinous properties of synovial fluid.

Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can be debilitating and negatively impact ones quality of life if not addressed. Chronic knee pain is most commonly the result of arthritis in the joint. Osteoarthritis of the knee refers to the degeneration of joint cartilage and bone, which in turn leads to less mobility, swelling and pain. There are many other causes of knee pain in addition to arthritis such as injury, improper bio-mechanics, obesity, sprain, strain and tendinitis just to name a few.

Viscosupplementation Treatment for Knee Pain

Our goal at WindwardHealthcare Center is to provide knee pain relief without risky surgery and painful rehabilitation. In the knee, joint fluid produced by your body that acts as lubricant to the joint begins to decline with age. When this joint fluid, commonly referred to as Synovial Fluid, becomes less readily available to the joint the painful symptoms increase. Replacing that fluid with an all-natural substitute by way of injection has proven to prolong the life of the knee joint and eliminate the painful symptoms.

Research has shown that an increase in synovial fluid to the joint can help increase the production of cartilage, nourish the surrounding tissue and help aid as a buffer or cushion to the joint. Furthermore, incorporating conjunctive physical therapy in addition to the injections yields the best result. We take a “full body” approach to your health as we realize that nothing in the body happens in isolation.

The treatments we provide for knee pain are as follows:

  • Hyaluronic acid injections (see below)
  • Active and Passive Physical Therapy for the surrounding soft tissue
  • Low force chiropractic adjustments to promote balance
  • Supporting the knee with a custom brace
  • Detoxing and cleaning the joint

Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee Pain

Knee pain associated with arthritis can be treated with an all-natural solution called hyaluronic acid that is painlessly injected directly into the knee. The body produces the main ingredient, sodium hyaluronate, naturally as its main purpose is to provide lubrication for the joints. As part of the aging process the bodies’ ability to produce this lubrication begins to slow down and thus, the painful symptoms associated with degenerative joint disease or arthritis begin to appear.

In an effort to help replenish the joints natural lubrication (Synovial Fluid) effectively it is recommended that a series of 5 injections be administered over the span of 5 weeks. To provide up to 18 months of knee pain relief, our doctor gives one injection per knee a week along with prescribing the necessary physical therapy to ensure that the pain level is decreasing, the range of motion is increasing and that the knee is strong and stable. Medicare and most insurance programs cover hyaluronic acid injections and the corresponding therapies.

Many clinical and studies have shown that hyaluronic acid injection is a proven method of knee pain relief.
